• Taste guide: Medium bodied & oaked; spicy floral notes and forest fruit present on the nose. On the palate, violets, dark fruit and liquorice of the Tempranillo intermingle with the flavoursome red fruit of the Garnacha. It has a powerful, front palate which immediately gives way to freshness, balance and a finish of cocoa, minerals and coffee.

Bodegas Bilbainas was established in 1901, when a group of Bilbao businessmen bought the winery from French producers who had created it in 1859 as a result of the phylloxera crisis in Bordeaux. Since its origins, the winery has specialised in farm wines that it produces based on the type of soil, orientation and age of the vines, and encompasses three major brands with which it responds to the classic profile of La Rioja and the new trends of the market: La Vicalanda, Viña Pomal and Viña Zaco.

First planted at the beginning of the 20th century, the vineyard of Viña Pomal is today a payment of 120 hectares, the oldest vines of which date back to 1971. Combining traditional practices with others of more advanced viticulture, the winery especially cultivates the Tempranillo variety, but also others such as graciano, garnacha and viura. With this raw material and after careful aging processes in American oak barrels, Viña Pomal offers some of the wines that are most faithful to the classic style of La Rioja.

With Viña Pomal Selección 500, the winery wanted to pay homage to the way that wine was made 100 years ago: ageing one of the varieties (Grenache) in 500-litre bocoys, large format barrels that were used to store and transport the wine, just as they did in the past. The result? A Rioja Crianza that pays tribute to age-old expertise. Now it's your turn to treat yourself!
