Based in Yecla, Bodegas Castaño is known for its huge efforts to promote one of Spain’s native varieties, Monastrell. Castaño symbolises the best of what southern Spain has to offer. Bodegas Castaño owns nearly 600 hectares of vineyards in different estates spread in D.O. Yecla. Rich, warm climate wines, with almost Syrah-like complexity, which over deliver in terms of value year after year. Monastrell was once used exclusively for bulk wines and blending, but Castaño began bottling characterful, single varietal Monastrell in the 1980s.

The incorporation of his three sons into the family company in the 80s, brought in a new focus aimed to consolidate the national markets and seek the international expansion. The Castaño family has always been considered a pioneer in the area, experimenting with the grape variety Monastrell to both create straight wines and blend it with other varieties, introducing the latest technology, not only in the vineyard but also in the winery, and implementing new quality systems that allow a more suitable winemaking. The willpower, strength and determination of Ramón Castaño Santa have been necessary in his endeavour to achieve the highest quality in his wines and his perseverance has certainly paid off.
