Viña Santa Carolina was founded in 1875 by Luis Pereyra Cotapos, naming the winery after his wife, Carolina. Their original vineyards were close to Santiago, but due to the expansion of the city in the 1960s the vines were gradually replanted in the Central Valley. Santa Carolina was then bought by the Larraín family business some 40 years ago.

In almost 150 years, the winery has earned various accolades. One of the proudest achievements is the gold medal awarded to Reserva de Familia Cabernet Sauvignon at Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889, which turned it into the first Chilean wine ever to achieve recognition internationally. Since then, accolades have kept coming from the most prestigious wine writers and publications from all over the world.

The grapes were grown in the La Rinconada vineyards in the Rapel Valley, close to the Cachapoal River which has wet short winters and long sunny summers. Temperatures vary greatly from warm days to cool nights which allow the grapes to ripen slowly to maintain natural acidity and develop complex flavours. The wine was then aged for eight months in French and American oak barrels before being bottled.

Mainly a restaurant wine, but retails at Ocado for £10 and £9 on offer at time of writing.
