Inspired by Spain's largely untapped fine wine resources, friends, colleagues and Masters of Wine, Fergal Tynan and Giles Cooke set off on a journey to find the unsung heroes of Spain, be they regions, growers or winemakers. Fergal's interest in wine terroirs and Giles' instincts for flavour, led them to unearth great Spanish wines whose stories were untold. Torre Solar Macabeo is such a wine, one of a collection of hand made wines grown and nurtured in the southern regions of Spain and produced by Vinos Más Buscados, literally meaning "wines most wanted".

Macabeo is a Spanish grape and known as Viura when it is the mainstay of White Rioja. It excels in La Mancha too. For this wine, the grapes were carefully harvested and cold soaked with small amount of skin contact with only free run juice and no pressings used. Inert gas treatment and cool fermentations using a variety of selected yeasts to gain texture mouthfeel and structure. The wine was given extended lees contact to give weight texture and savoury notes, then 40% was aged for 4 months in a mixture of French and American oak barrels. All components were then carefully back blended to produce the final wine.

The colour is golden yellow, with aromas of tropical and citrus fruits. Ripe pineapple, lemon and lime on the nose explode on the palate combined with crisp, refreshing acidity and a long mineral finish. The partial oak fermentation adds complexity and body, with buttery notes which together with the fruit driven components gives a diverse old world wine with a new world twist.

Has a recommended retail price of £9.49 but sold off by the importer to make way for a newer vintage.

Still drinking supremely well and a steal at just £5.95
