Italy

Italy

Known by the Greeks as Oenotria – Land of Wine – vineyards run across the slopes of Italy, from the northern tip of right down to the toe. Italy is the world’s largest wine producer, though a fair percentage of that production goes in to making Vermouth. With over 2000 grape varieties reportedly grown, the range of styles is as diverse as the food.

Gone are the days of Chianti in straw bottles, fit only for candles. Modern Italy is a melting pot of well-made wines with true regional expression – from Barolo, Barbaresco and Amarone in the north, right down to the Negroamaro in Sicily, via the Sangiovese of Tuscany’s Chianti.

There are some equally superb whites, although the world does appear to be awash with Pinot Grigio, the in grape variety of the moment.
