South Africa

South Africa

Despite having a winemaking heritage dating back some 300 years, the South Africans have only really asserted themselves on the international scene in the post-apartheid years. But what an entrée it has been.

The whites in particular have impressed, with superbly complex Sauvignon Blanc giving New Zealand a run for its gooseberries, some really top notch Chardonnays and without doubt, the best Chenin Blancs outside the Loire.

The reds too can impress, particularly at the top end, with the smoky, love-it-or-hate-it national variety Pinotage, taking its place alongside some seriously good Bordeaux varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and also Syrah.
