The Waipara Valley is situated north of Christchurch in the South island of New Zealand; and the Sherwood family, pioneers of the Waipara Valley, have been working this land for over 30 years. This is a region with great potential that is still to be realised fully, where the extended growing season of warm, fine days and cool nights ensures the fruit was harvested in wonderful condition.
Ferndale Sauvignon Blanc was produced from grapes grown on Estate vineyards in the heart of the Waipara Valley. After the harvest the fruit was gently pressed, settled and racked to fermentation in stainless steel vats to retain the inherent fruit in the grapes. The juice was then cool fermented for 21 days and left on yeast lees contact for a further two months. This was follwoed by light fining and filtering before bottling.
The nose is full of herbaceous notes of nettle, cut grass and a hint of asparagus. The palate is crisp with flavours of gooseberry, grapefruit, crab apple and passionfruit with light acidity. Crisp and fresh with good minerality and a lengthy, satisfying finish.
Fabulous with any seafood dish, poultry or Asian salad.
The winery indicates that this vintage will be drinking well throughout 2021 and perhaps beyond.
This is a very classy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. A single Estate wine produced and bottled at the winery - unlike all the cheapies you find in the supermarkets. Waipara wines are considered by many to be superior to Marlborough ones.
Binendwines used to stock wines from Sherwood Estates many years ago when they were handled by a different importer.
We visited this winery when we were touring New Zealand in 2007. We're glad we found this wine now being offered at a discount as it has been one of our favourites for years.
Sells elsewhere for around £11.99 - Binendwines' price is just £8.95.
