Origin: Western Cape D.O. South Africa
Taste guide: Medium bodied, cherry, plum and raspberry fruit flavours, hints of herbs and spice, unoaked
75cl - 13% - screwcap
Produced by one of South Africa's leading volume wineries, Distell, specifically for a certain wholesale company and bearing what can only be described as an odd brand name and a garish label. But as we've often said, you don't drink the label.
Produced from Merlot grapes grown in some of the best vineyards in the sun-drenched Western Cape region and vinified in Distell's modern winery in Stellenbosch.
This wine is rich, dark red in colour with juicy ripe plum flavours on the palate combined with sweet black cherry notes. Hints of herbs and spices with softened inherent tannins. Despite the label, this actually is a very good Merlot - supple, round-bodied, rich and fruity.
Best served with roast chicken, beef or lamb dishes.
Seen on restaurant menus at prices up to £23 - which really is ludicrous.
Retail value more like £6.95 - now reduced even further to just £4.95 at Binendwines.
