The northern part of Beaujolais contains the best vineyards and the most important of these is the ten "Beaujolias Crus" each with its own appellation contrôlée. Chiroubles is the highest cru in Beaujolais, rising to 450 metres above sea level at its peak.
The Domaine des Pontheux has been run by the Meziat family and handed down from father to son since 1889. The vineyards of this three-hectare domaine face south-southwest on steep slopes at 400 metres altitude, and the soil is a mix of granite and sand. giving one of the lightest, purest styles of Beaujolais. The vines are mainly worked by hand using traditional methods. The vinification of this wine was undertaken at the winery of George Duboeuf, the King of Beaujolais.
Following hand harvesting the Gamay grapes were fermented at 28-32ºC, then after malolactic fermentation the wine was aged in tank rather than oak, to preserve all the floral nuance of the aromas.
Bright garnet in colour, surprisingly intense on the nose, with "sorbet vigneron" and blackcurrant aromas! This Chiroubles is also wonderfully expressive on the palate, full of raspberry and cherry fruit flavours, with typical delicacy and floral notes. Medium bodied, it is delicious and hearty with mellow, unobtrusive tannins. An absolute delight!
Reviewed by renowned American wine writer, Roger Voss:- It is already balanced, with black fruits and integrated tannins that add a black core to the ripe wine. Perfumed and juicy, the wine will be ready from late 2020.
Beaujolais wines are often recommended to be drunk cool, around 16°, but it's personal choice.
Ideal with all light dishes, Beaujolais is one of the few red wines that ideally accompany Poultry. This is a wine we would have with Christmas turkey.
