The Torres family has been making wine in the ancient Catalán town of Vilafranca del Penedès, south-west of Barcelona, since the 17th Century. It is this tradition combined with innovation, dynamism and commitment to quality that has put Torres firmly on the world map.
Torres San Valentín was created by third generation Miguel Torres Carbó as a gift to his wife, Margarita Riera, on Saint Valentine's Day, as a wine to take on summer walks and picnics.
It is made primarily with the local Parellada grape and a little Garnacha Blanca. The Parellada grape, the best traditional white variety found in Torres’ highest vineyards, produces fruity, aromatic wines with moderate alcoholic strength.
After harvest the grapes were vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel and underwent a cool fermentation for 15 days at around 16 to 17C.
The wine has a clear pale yellow colour, with enticing aromas of fresh grapes, together with ripe bananas and flowers. On the palate the wine is voluptuous and slightly sweet with a lingering finish reminiscent of quince.
This wine was produced to just 11% alcohol with a higher than usual level of residual natural sugars of glucose and fructose. This combination of lightness and a touch of sweetness makes it an ideal summer wine
Serving chilled is a must, around 8°C and then it is a delicious accompaniment to milder flavoured shellfish and crustaceans such as clams and spider crab, or fish in sweet sauces. Or do as we did and drink it on its own!
Torres was voted " The World's Most Admired Wine Brand" in 2017 by a survey conducted by Drinks International.
Although an earlier vintage this wine is drinking superbly well and is thoroughly recommended.
