Award-winning Australian winemaker, Neil McGuigan has collaborated once more with TV Presenter and Chef John Torode to create a fine Tempranillo; the first red in the McGuigan Torode collaboration series. The pair had already produced a food friendly McGuigan/Torode Rosé and McGuigan/Torode Semillon and this completed their range. The wine is a meeting of minds between Neil’s expertise in quintessentially Australian reds and John’s taste for exceptional wines that complement great quality food.

Tempranillo is of course the grape of Spain, particularly Rioja, and flourishes in the superb Adelaide Hills sub-region. The 2017 vintage was very mild with warm days and cool nights. The combination of these conditions allowed this vintage to develop into one of the great vintages of the past decade giving wines of intense fruit depth and beautiful natural acidity. Fruit for the Tempranillo was sourced from McGuigan's Charleston vineyard (single vineyard, Estate owned). The grapes were crushed, de-stemmed and fermented in open tank fermenters for 7 days. The wine was then bag pressed to tank and racked, before being matured in French and American oak for 10 months. The various constituents were then skilfully blended, and the wine bottled.

An abundance of raspberry, black cherry and black plum dominate the fragrant bouquet, with a subtle vanilla thread and faint liquorice note playing pivotal supportive roles. On the palate, this flavoursome red combines berry flavours with a savoury earthiness and subtle spice yielding to a subtle and exquisitely long finish.
All in all, a youthful, exuberant, well-crafted wine, but ultimately benefitting from 18 months bottle ageing allowing the wine to mellow a little.

Chief winemaker, Neil McGuigan said, ‘‘Following our success with Semillon and Rosé, it only seemed right to add a vibrant red wine to our McGuigan Torode range. A growing appetite for Tempranillo in the UK was our inspiration, and so we explored every corner of the Adelaide Hills before finding the fruit to make our own version of this delicious varietal. Bright and approachable, we’re confident this wine fits with our shared ambition to create top quality food-friendly wines that anyone can enjoy.’

John Torode added: ‘Many people tend to save red for the winter months, but I love nothing more than a flavoursome red to enjoy at a summer BBQ. I’ll be pairing with my miso steak recipe which is a perfect match with the raspberry and blueberry tones of the wine.’

If you love Australian wines, you will love this. If you love Rioja and other Spanish reds, you will love this wine.

Sells elsewhere for £9.99. We recently sold out and managed to get some more, but the vagaries of auctions meant we had to pay a bit more for this stock and have had to adjust our price accordingly.

But at just £7.25,  Binendwines' price is still great value.
