Bodegas Piqueras is a family winery with a tradition dating back over a hundred years, currently overseen by the fourth generation of winemakers, winegrowers and cellarmen. They produce high quality wine not only from traditional Spanish varietals but also from International grape varieties such as this superb Syrah (Shiraz). Their estates are in the vicinity of Almansa Castle, with vines up to 90 years old producing grapes of high concentration and high quality, perfect for making red wines that are highly expressive and unique.
“One of the best value producers I’ve discovered in my 28 years in the industry.” – Steve Bennett Master of Wine, Importer.
The Syrah grapes for this wine came from a single-estate 110 hectare vineyard - grown on 25-30 year-old vines at an altitude of 700-800 metres. They were night harvested by hand at optimum ripeness and vinified in an ultra-modern winery with temperature-controlled fermentation over a 3 week period. The wine was then aged for 6 months in 300 litre American fine grain medium-toasted oak casks.
The resultant wine was described thus by eminent wine writer, Sam Kim in Wine Orbit.
“It is superbly ripe and opulent on the nose showing dark fruit, smoked meat, vanilla and toasted hazel nut characters with a hint of earthy/savoury notes. The palate delivers excellent fruit weight and concentration, and offers velvety texture and plush mouthfeel. A delectable, mouth-filling Syrah with seductive savoury undertones. At its best: now to 2020.”
Another review - “This Spanish wine is the best-value Syrah I have tasted in years. Dark-fruited, with blackberry, chocolate and sweet juicy characters generous but round tannins and moderate acidity. A genuinely ripe style not overburdened with oak, fleshy and generous yet finishing dry which would make it a great accompaniment to grilled meat.
