Bodegas Piqueras is one of the driving forces behind the creation of Almansa DO and was founded in 1915 by Mario Bonete. It is now overseen by the fourth generation of winemakers, winegrowers and cellarmen. As well as producing high quality wine with unique Spanish grapes they also create superb wines from International varietals such as here with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Almansa Denominación de Origen (D.O.) is situated some 100 kilometres inland from Valencia and Bodegas Piqueras estates are in the vicinity of Almansa Castle.
Their Cabernet Sauvignon grows on 25-30 year-old trellised vines in a single estate vineyard of 110 hectares, some 700 metres above sea level. Harvesting started in late September and was carried out at night to avoid the heat of the day and to retain all the inherent freshness of the grapes. These were then macerated for 18 days and fermented at warm temperatures to extract the maximum aroma, flavour and colour. The wine was then aged for 6 months in 300 litre American fine grain medium-toasted oak casks prior to bottling.
This is a full-bodied red wine with deep colour, complex fruit aromas, dense tannins and structured elegance. The fruit is cassis and blackberry, with hints of plum and black cherry. Its time in oak barrels has seen the development of complex layered aromas with a hint of smokiness, cedar, liquorice and a seductive touch of truffle. The winery indicates great ageing potential.
Enjoy this luscious red wine simply on its own or accompanied by roasted or grilled red meat or game dishes, pasta dishes with rich sauces - indeed any rich food.
