Sadly, many people's knowledge of Zinfandel is limited to that sweet, pink concoction, "White Zinfandel", which is a favourite of the younger set. However, it is of course a classic red grape that produces some classy, full, and powerful red wines. Let one of California's best winemakers define it for you.
"Zinfandel is a California classic. Its fruit flavours jump out at you. Ripe blackberries and succulent plums held together with spicy notes of cinnamon, clove and peppercorn. The layers of flavours and supportive structure coat the mouth and resonate with spice before slipping smoothly down the throat." -- Ron Schrieve, Winemaker Beringer.
Beringer's vineyard team selects the grapes for this wine predominantly from Zinfandel vineyards known for producing a deeply fruity wine with the spicy peppery notes that typify this varietal. To preserve the full, fruit-forward character of these grapes, the fruit is quickly vinified after harvest. This produces a soft, velvety red wine, with lots of juicy, cranberry, blueberry fruit, together with deep plum flavours, all overlaid with a hint of sweet mocha. Beringer Zinfandel is a great all rounder, especially with spicy food, such as barbecued ribs, chilli con carne and peppered steak.
Beringer is the No 1 Californian wine brand in the US and is the most awarded and historic winery in America. 11 time winner of “winery of the year”.
