Origin: South Eastern Australia - McGuigan's Wines
Taste guide: Medium bodied, rich flavours of spiced fruit with chocolate notes, lightly oaked
75cl - 13% - screwcap
McGuigan's Black Label is the no.1 selling wine by volume in Australia. Malbec is one of the current "in" red grape varietals - known as the signature red grape of Argentina but originally established in Bordeaux and Cahors in France.
McGuigan's have now created their Australian take on Malbec and this is their second vintage. To achieve the required style, the fruit was sourced from both their irrigated and dry-grown vineyards across Riverland, Murray Darling & Limestone Coast regions. Harvesting was carried out in the cool of the evening and the fruit was crushed and fermented on the skins. The wine was then matured in both tank and oak before filtering and bottling.
This Malbec shows intense depth of colour - deep cherry red with purple hues. Aromas of spiced fruit, plum and blackberry with layers of chocolate and sweet spice. There is generous weight and good length of flavour. Red fruit chaarcters abound with the finish showing softened oak notes.
A spokesperson for the company said "McGuigan Malbec embodies the bold character and spicy flavour profile of an Argentinian variety, but without being overly weighty, incorporating the lighter elements of a classic French Malbec."
The soft smooth structure of this Malbec makes it a great partner for a range of dishes featuring red meat. But the ultimate partner would be a juicy grilled rib-eye steak.
