Pinotage is a uniquely South African grape, developed 95 years ago as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, with Cinsaut's common, if misleading, Cape synonym Hermitage, providing the third syllable.

With more than 300 years of winemaking history, South Africa is one of the most relevant wine producing countries in the Southern Hemisphere, repeatedly regarded as a bridge between the Old and the New World. Vines were first planted in South Africa by Dutch colonists in the 1650s and Nederberg was founded in 1791.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from select vineyards across the Western Cape region, carefully chosen to enable the winemaker Samuel Viljoen to produce the very best Pinotage. Each batch was separately fermented in stainless steel tanks with controlled temperature between 25ºC and 28ºC for approximately two weeks. The constituent wines were then blended directly under the supervision of chief winemaker Andrea Freeborough and aged in French and American oak barrels for 6 months, and then bottled.

Nederburg Pinotage is bright ruby red in colour and offers aromas of ripe plums with a hint of liquorice and spices in the background. The palate continues the stone fruit flavours with oak and vanilla nuances. It has good structure with well integrated acidity, smooth tannins, balanced alcohol and a persistent aftertaste.

Delicious with pasta, spicy pepperoni pizza, spicy meat, lamb and cheese.

Rarely seen on the High Street; we could only find the one outlet with a retail price of £8.95.

Binendwines' price was £6.95 now offered at £5.95 until the end of February.
