Torres has a proud history of winemaking in Catalunya for over 140 years.
In the mountainous area of the Upper Penedès the more delicate and aromatic white grape varieties are grown. Moscatel and Gewürtztraminer form the basis for Viña Esmeralda, an exceptionally delicate and strikingly fragrant wine.
Torres is particularly proud of their white wines. The production of these types of pure, clean and seductive wines, as we see them today, was quite difficult for our ancestors. However, we now know the secret and have the resources to maintain the fruit properties and transform them into unique, refreshing and elegant wines with a little help from the climate, the land, our well-cared for grapevines and experience.
Viña Esmerelda was produced from 85% Muscat de Alexandria (Moscatel) grapes and 15% Gewürztraminer. The Muscat was harvested in early September, the later ripening Gewürztraminer in mid-October, with both vinified separately in stainless steel under controlled temperature for a period of 2 weeks. The two elements were carefully blended, rested for a short time to meld, then the final wine bottled.
Brilliant pale straw in colour, the wine exhibits fragrant, aromatic and floral notes on the nose - honey and orange blossom - with delicate nuances of exotic fruit and a note of apple jam. The palate is smooth, sensual and silky showing balancing delicate acidity (pink grapefruit). There is a subtle honeyed trace on the long finish.
Goes well with seafood appetizers, fish and paté, and is well worth trying with Asian food.
Reviewed by Sarah-Jane Evans, Decanter magazine, March 2018 - An old favourite, consistently good and ideal for when the sun shines. Terrifically grapey Moscatel with a dash of blowsy Gewürztraminer , fresh and delicate in alcohol. A sumptuous match for Asian dishes with coconut and spice. (2017 vintage)
The winery indicates that this wine will keep for 2 years after vintage, but we can confirm that this slightly older vintage is still drinking superbly well. Why not try a slightly off-dry white for a change? Ideal for summer drinking.
Sells for £9.19 in Waitrose - at Binendwines was £5.95 now reduced to £4.95 to clear the last few bottles.
