Origin: Rubicone I.G.T. Italy
Taste guide: Medium bodied, cherry and raspberry fruit flavours, integrated tannins, part oaked
75cl - 13.5% - cork closure
Just over the Apenines from the Chianti region of Tuscany lies Rubicone, a region famed for its richly concentrated wines made from the same grape as Chianti - Sangiovese. And here you have one of the most intense and fruit filled, from a top estate that has won many awards for its wines.
For this outstanding wine, the grapes came from 3 separate vineyards selected by the winery's Australian winemaker who combines all the modernity of the New World with the centuries-old Italian winemaking tradition.
Fermentation was conducted under temperature controlled conditions. A portion of the resultant wine was then aged in Oak barrels with the remainder refermented on the grape skins. The parts were then blended to form the final wine which was allowed to settle before bottling.
This wine is deep bright red in colour and offers a bouquet full of cherry and raspberry fruit. This continues through the palate which is full of cherry fruit with a classic Italian tang. Spice notes and a touch of cinnamon add to the complexity. The tannins from the part oak ageing are softened and add good backbone.
A good companion to lasagne and stewed meat.
Not seen on the internet in the UK but similar wines with the likes of Laithwaites are over £8 a bottle. Why pay these prices or indeed buy a Chianti when you can have this wine for just £5.50?
Cross the Rubicon and enjoy this wine.
