Origin: Bordeaux Appellation d'Origin Protégée
Taste guide: Medium bodied, blackcurrant and red fruit flavours, softened integral tannins, unoaked
75cl - 12% - screwcap
The house of Calvet has been a specialist in Bordeaux wines since 1818 - almost 200 years - and owns some of the most prestigious vineyards in Bordeaux, producing some classic single Château wines.
This wine is from their "Limited Release" varietal range offering Bordeaux wines at an affordable price and is made from 100% Merlot sourced from the best locations across this appellation.
The selected grapes were fermented between 26-28° to preserve the fruit aromas with short and regular “pumping over” operations to extract the tannins, colour and aromas. The final wine was bottled without oak ageing young to preserve the freshness of the aromas.
Showing a wonderful ruby body with purple highlights there is an intense bouquet of red fruits and black cherries. This continues on the palate with cassis notes melding with the red berry flavours. Overall this is a soft wine with round, elegant tannins and red fruit and liquorice notes ending on a very long finish.
Like many everyday wines this was produced to be drunk young, but having tasted it we can confirm that also like many such wines, it has improved with bottle ageing. This is quite a light Merlot but totally delivers on flavour and taste and is the perfect accompaniment to grilled red meats and lamb.
Sells in many places for over £9 - in Waitrose it is £7.49.
Binendwines' price is just £5.75.
