Malbec

Originally from Bordeaux, now virtually non-existent there, but is the major grape of Cahors, in S.W. France. Following its transportation to South America in the 19th century, Malbec is now the widest planted red grape in Argentina, and regarded as its signature red grape. Really excels in the high altitudes of Mendoza and San Rafael. The wines have luscious gamey concentration, are deep coloured, with rich, intensely fruity flavours, with underlying sweeter fruit elements of blackcurrants and mulberries. Also becoming popular in other New World countries, such as Australia.

The altitude of Mendoza at some 1,000 metres moderates the temperature causing an extended ripening season. It also exposes the vines to more ultra-violet light, encouraging the development of colour and tannin in varietals such as Malbec. This wine is produced from hand picked grapes from a virtually organic vineyard, with natural yeasts used in fermentation. Bottled early with no oaking results in a vibrant, fruit packed wine of considerable quality.
